Ridgely Elementary School in Springfield, Illinois was originally a 1900 vintage 3-story classroom building with a 2-story gymnasium and cafeteria wing located on an urban site.
With Graham & Hyde’s guidance, the 3-story classroom building was replaced with a 2-story, 16-classroom building, a multi-purpose room, offices, and a kitchen. The 2-story gym and cafeteria building was gutted and renovated to make way for a gymnasium, music room, and art room.
Ridgely’s renovated building now features natural day-lighting for classrooms and the cafeteria/multi-purpose room, elevators for increased accessibility, expanded playground and parking area, and a highly insulated and efficient building envelope.
Construction was sequenced in three phases over nearly two years while school was in continuous operation on the site.
